Introduction to American Boarding Schools

American boarding schools are never represented correctly in movies or books. While certainly not schools for magic and witchcraft, most American boarding schools do specialize in one of two fields – college preparation or behavior adjustment.

College Preparation at American Boarding Schools

For better or worse, college readiness and acceptance has completely dominated the minds of most highly-educated parents. With the shortcomings of many public schools, and the unexpected (and often unpublished) problems with traditional private or charter schools, many parents in hot pursuit of the Ivy Leagues turn to a last resort – American boarding schools.

American boarding schools specializing in college preparation offer curriculum far more challenging than public or private schools. Boarding schools are not hampered by the governmental influence of public schools, and with highly qualified teachers in close contact with students around the clock, the students in American boarding schools are less distracted and better able to continually achieve at higher levels than students in private schools.

Despite the abundance of negative representation in various movies and books, most students in American boarding schools genuinely enjoy their time away from home. Unfortunately, to be surrounded by peers of equal academic ability and motivation is an experience few bright students today are able to enjoy.

Behavior Correction at American Boarding Schools

The other brand of American boarding schools is the program designed to help students bring about behavioral change. Often these schools are referred to as military schools, which many are, but this is not the case for all. Often, simply removing a troubled teen from an unpleasant school or social situation can bring about tremendous positive change. In the same manner, if parents and student have been in a longstanding feud, it might be easier and more productive for all parties to spend time apart.

American boarding schools designed for correcting negative and reinforcing positive behavior work hard to offer students an opportunity for the structure they crave. The “friendly” parenting popular today is often misrepresented by many parents as simply friends, not parents, and teens who don’t receive the structure and limits they need quickly lose control. If teens are unmanageable, they are in desperate need of help before they go over the edge. Military and other highly structured American boarding schools offer them this chance.

If a child is beyond the help of parents, no matter how well-intentioned the parent may be, it might be time to seek help. Military and other American boarding schools focused on behavior have a long tradition of excellence. Many parents might be surprised at how willing a surly teen might be to attend a boarding school. There is definitely an attraction to finally have an opportunity to experience an education they can be proud of.
